Mattering is a very complicated business. Nothing matters, full stop. You always have to ask what exactly it is that matters, for whom or for what. In the case of William Hague, that means there are dozens of questions flying about, all of which are getting somewhat confused.
Being gay or bisexual in itself should clearly not be an issue at all, except perhaps for his wife Ffion. Would it matter, however, if Hague were revealed to be a love rat? Again, not in itself, not for the general public. That's not because infidelity is harmless or there's no such thing as sexual morality. Friends and family would have good reason to be bothered by any such revelations.
Nevertheless, for the rest of us, politicians need to be judged on how well they do their jobs, not on how good or nice they are in their private lives. I would love to have a parliament full of people who are committed, competent, have the right political values and are lovely human beings. However, of these qualities, loveliness is without question the lowest of my priorities.

In the document, obtained by Access Hollywood (included in the felony Possession of a Controlled Substance charge against the heiress, filed in court by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office on Monday), an LVPD officer detailed how the cocaine discovery happened in the Wynn Hotel security holding room where the heiress was waiting for a female officer to arrive to take her to the bathroom.

The Court rules that an "all comers" policy, at least as it exists at the Hastings College of Law, is constitutionally reasonable, taking into account all of the surrounding circumstances. The opinion notes that the lower courts did not address the CLS's argument that hastings selectively enforces its "all comers" policy. Therefore, the 9th Circuit may consider that argument if, and to the extent that, it has been preserved by CLS. In dealing with the policy, the Court's opinion notes that it was designed to open eligibility to student organizations given access not only for membership but also for leadership.

Interestingly, rather than resolving the free association issue, the Court seems to have very narrowly decided the case - dealing with an "all-comers policy" that is virtually unique to Hastings. It appears that the Court has left open the core issue that has bedeviled student groups nationwide, the conflict between free association and nondiscrimination policies that prohibit, among other things, discrimination on the basis of religion and sexual orientation.

This is pure first blush assessment; more to come as I read through the opinion. Bottom line: a disappointing decision but one that does not come close to settling core constitutional issues on campus. In fact, it doesn't even decide this case since it's remanded for further proceedings.

A whole new piece of drama has arisen for singer Britney Spears. Her former bodyguard, Fernando Flores, has come forward with claims that Spears sexually harassed him while he was working for her.

The Sun claims that the former police officer is considering a sexual harassment lawsuit against the singer, who reportedly would call him into her bedroom all the time and strut around naked in front of him.

The source said, “She was always giving him the come on and he felt that if he didn’t reciprocate he could lose his job. He finally handed in his notice last week and is considering legal action.”
